Search and rescue dog training

Easy Steps To A Well Behaved Dog

Properly training your dog is a responsibility of dog ownership. It is important to train your dog right away as a puppy, so you can avoid dealing with rude or destructive behavior from your four legged friend. This article will give you some great tips about how to train your dog.

Training your dog to accept handling from strangers is crucial to their socialization. Begin by making sure the dog allows you to handle it without protest. Run your hands down the dog's legs, under its belly, pull gently at its ears, and open the dog's mouth. This will make it much easier for professionals like veterinarian's and groomers to handle your dog in the future.

Your dog will benefit from consistency. Make sure that everybody in your house knows the same commands you have taught your dog. All physical commands should be given the same way among family members. In other words, your "sit" command should look the same whether your sister or your mother asks your dog to do it!

One tip to keep in mind when training your dog is that you will want to keep the leash with little to no slack in it.  This is important so that your dog does not pull against the leash and try to run uncontrollably when walking it.  It is important to ensure that your dog knows to stay by your side.

You need to recognize when your dog is not behaving like you want. Do not  reinforce undesirable behavior. By reinforcing what is wrong, it will help the dog develop bad habits and they will start ignoring your commands for behaving right. They will then regularly misbehave and that's no good.

Be consistent. It is going to take a lot of work to train your dog. And if you aren't consistent, you can undo all the work that you did in the first place. You have to teach your dog the way to behave, and that is true whether you feel great or whether you're busy, stressed or sick. Consistent behavior from you leads to consistent behavior from your dog.

"Time out" training works with dogs and puppies as well as with children. If your dog exhibits inappropriate behavior like jumping, nipping, or running crazy through the house, try a "time out" in a crate or quiet room. This will allow the dog to calm down, and will provide incentive to avoid the behavior in the future.

Take care to not punish any signs of desirable behavior. For example, if your puppy goes outside like they should, you should not immediately leave them. If they want to be near you and then you have just up and leave, it will confuse them because they did something right and they may feel like they are being punished.

Dogs that are going to be used for police work or in search and rescue are trained using methods that will strengthen their natural prey drive. This is done by using their favorite toy as a reward. The goal is to have a dog that will work for extended periods of time because he knows that he will get play time when his work is through.

Rescue

Listen to professional advice. If you adopt a dog from a shelter or a rescue organization, listen to their advice. More often than not, they will have spent a lot of time with the dog, and will know the best method to train him. Some shelter dogs are very skittish, and require extra care when trying to train them, especially if they have been previously mistreated.
